Darren Womanhood Initiation

Mother/Gingerbread Witch, Day 240. Four tea cookies. [1/4]

In Darre, when a girl is about to become a woman (so...around the age of thirteen!), she's sent into the forest for thirty days to live on her own, survive without anyone to help her. When she returns -- and if you want to become a respectable woman warrior, you have to return -- her sponsor (usually a mother, aunt, grandmother) picks out a man that she must defeat in combat. If she doesn't, then he rapes her in front of the town! QUALITY INITIATIONS!! Usually sponsors pick weaker men, someone that they know their child can defeat in combat. But because Yeine was to be ennu -- or the leader of the Darren people -- her grandmother picked the strongest man in town.
"I put on a good show," I said. "Enough to satisfy the requirements of the ritual. Then I stabbed him in the head with a stone knife I had hidden in my sleeve."

The council had been upset about that, especially once it became clear I had not conceived. Bad enough I had killed a man, but to also lose his seed and the strength it might have given future Darre daughters? For a while victory had made things worse for me. She is no true Darre, went the whispers. There is too much death in her.

This is actually a recollection which Yeine remembers as if it were yesterday -- she tells Scimina, who then changes the subject and asks Yeine about her private life with Nahadoth (thanks cousin!). Yeine pretty much has had enough of that, and leaves.

Effects:
• '-' I have no patience for people who try me too much, must put an end to ridiculous spectacle!
• No qualms about killing people if they're trying to control me or use me!!
• Okay so maybe I did actually like Nahadoth that's....definitely a thing
• There are a lot of other, more subtle things in this -- the fact that this sort of reinforces the idea of the tough upbringing and the tough world she comes from, and the rough woman's culture of Darr. Mostly it just makes her aware that she was a warrior and a strong leader, and also that there seems to be something between her and Naha.
